Well... Lauren can do no wrong, right?
Description:
So, this book is about the romantic journey between Brynn, and her sister's best friend, Will, which has a long rich history of some mean, teasing, enemy type of stuff. Will is dealing with being in love with Brynn from almost the first time he saw her back in high school, Brynn is dealing with her childhood trauma of being bullied because of her looks and shy personality. Everything in her life came as a result of this trauma, she changed her looks, changed looks and tried to be as perfect as possible. After this change, without knowing her background of hurt, Will fell in love with her.
Review:
Now, there are so many elements I like in this book, I have a weakness to the romance between a character and its sibling best friend, the flawed but not broken characters, and Layne's writing. It's so good, how she does it, she makes it all go straight to my heart, makes me drown in the plot, and the events just work. If anyone else would have written this book I doubt I would give it this free pass, because the writing of everything is what saved this book.
From what? You might ask.
Let me tell you.
This relationship is destructive. How Will plans to manipulate Brynn to him, to his arms, how Brynn uses him, how she doesn't really see him. Their actions and the reasoning behind them.. sometimes they broke into each other's house and even went to the bathroom while the other showered, thought he was alone in his own home!
And that Will kissed Brynn at the start without her consent while she had a boyfriend (yes, we were all rooting for him to be out of her life. And yes, it was still wrong). It was a roller coaster ride of emotions, and in it came shame that I root for and enjoy this tale of a destructive relationship, two people who tear and wear each other down.
But the way Layne wrote them is unique, I liked these characters. Without the care she put into her words I would wish them both to be dead.
That's it. Sad for me. Lauren showed, again, how much I like her, though with what she decided for this book, there were times I wish I didn't.
3 stars out of 5 stars
Let me end with this: Lauren Layne is my favorite romance writer, yes, even after I found this book lackluster and sometimes a bit harming. I like her writing style and what she writes about. everybody has their worse works, but a lot of her books I find good and enjoyable, so... yes. I will keep reading her books and probably enjoy it.
Alice.
